Maserati at Monaco: What can they achieve?

Written by Cydney Barge and Merisse Baker

As we approach the most glamorous e-prix of the season, the home heroes Maserati are hoping to make a further impression in the Formula E Championship. After a fabulous podium in Berlin, can they continue their momentum? Who may be standing in their way?

Before 2021, the Monaco e-prix has had a drastically different layout to that of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, due to worries of comparison between the two championships. However, since then the track has been changed to the more ‘traditional’ layout – something that has attracted an abundance of fans and perhaps even teams.

Maserati MSG Racing are the only Monaco-based team in Formula E, having entered the sport at the start of this season. Their team owners are Monaco Sports Group (MSG), and having taken over Venturi for this year, are determined to make a good impression around their home streets. With experienced e-prix winners Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther, can they achieve a podium – or even better, a first win?

The pressure of being at their home race appears to be substantial, but in a recent interview with team principal James Rossiter, he said that the drivers are confident, and that they can ‘build off the momentum of Berlin’, stating that there is ‘nothing we cannot achieve’. When we asked him about being the only Monaco-based team, he ensured us ‘being the only team born out of Monaco gives us a really unique perception on the Principality’, and that it is an ‘incredible opportunity to race in front of our families, our friends and our passionate fans’.

Maserati currently sit 7th in the team’s championship with 29 points, and their drivers 12th and 20th in the driver’s championship. James Rossiter is, however, hopeful for upcoming races, as he claims ‘we have shown pace throughout the season but have been incredibly unlucky’. The likes of Wehrlein, Cassidy, Vergne and Dennis will also be fighting for the top spots in Monaco as they bid to stay top of the standings. It will be a tough fight for Mortara and Günther, but with their experience, the current positive attitude of the team, and cheers from the home crowd, anything can happen.
