Luca Marini is the younger half-brother of Valentino Rossi. He made his debut in the Moto3 championship at the 2013 San Marino Grand Prix as a wildcard. He made his Moto2 debut with a wildcard at the 2015 San Marino Grand Prix and finished the race in 21st place. Marini was signed for the Forward Team to compete full-time in Moto2 for 2016. He scored his first championship points in Qatar and his best finish was a 6th place finish in Germany. Marini remained with Forward Team for 2017 and achieved a best finish of 4th in Czech Republic.
In 2018, Marini was signed by the Sky Racing Team VR46 where he scored his first podium in Germany and his first victory in Malaysia. He finished the year in 7th overall. Marini remained with the VR46 team for the 2019 season and achieved four podiums including two wins to finish in 6th overall. In 2020, Marini was a championship contender with six podiums including three wins to finish 2nd in the championship. In 2021, Marini moved up to the MotoGP class with the Sky VR46 Avintia. It was a consistent season for Marini as he finished every race and scored points in 11 races. Marini moved to the newly formed Mooney VR46 team for 2022 where had another consistent season. He crashed out of the Malaysian Grand Prix which was his first MotoGP retirement. He finished 12th overall that year. In 2023, Marini continued with the Mooney VR46 Racing Team. 2023 was a successful season for Marini, he would go on to claim 2 sunday podiums and 4 sprint podiums before it was announced he would replace Marc Marquez at Repsol Honda for 2024.
